When we moved my 8-year-old daughter into her own room last year, one thing was certain: In order to make the 80-square-foot space work, we’d need to loft the bed. And after reading basically the entire internet, I found the perfect solution: the Max & Lily Mid-Century Modern Full Loft Bed, which was just narrow enough to fit along the short side of the bedroom. The next challenge? Finding a mattress that was thin enough to nestle into the 13-inch guard rails, but substantial enough that it still felt like a real mattress that could grow with her into the teen years.
We settled on the Avocado Eco Organic Kids Mattress which, at 7” high, was one of the slimmest profiles on the market. After seven months of use by my daughter, here’s my honest review.
What Is the Ideal Mattress for a Child?
First things first: Do kids even need different mattresses than adults? Of course not. (Growing up, I’m pretty sure I had my parents’ old hand-me-down mattress, and I did just fine.) But most pediatricians agree that kids do best with firmer mattresses, which best support their growing bodies and spinal alignment.
It gets trickier when you’re trying to find a mattress to fit a loft or trundle, i.e., one that needs to be firm and comfortable enough for kids, but also low profile enough so that it doesn’t stick over the side of the guard rails. (Ever notice how every mattress these days seems to be 12” high?)
In other words, the best mattress for your child is probably a combination of the best mattress for their growing body and the best mattress for your specific bedframe.
